I promised to keep you updated with that Award winning thing. Remember? In my original post below, I told you we had been awarded by the CV Magazine in their 2017 Consultancy & Advisory Awards. And I said, that a certain Laura Hunter from “Acquisition International” sent me an email saying that she was “pleased to inform” me “that CACTUS COMPETENCE has received a nomination” for the 2018 Business Excellence Awards. Did you read it? It’s below. Sorry again for my subtle irony. 😉
And the strange thing went on. Now, we have the confirmation:
“Cactus Competence has been successful in the Acquisition International Magazine’s 2018 Business Excellence Awards, and has been awarded:
Best Project Management Consultancy – Europe”
Even if this sounds amazing. Please, no need for congrats. Why not?
Well, we already suspected them doing all these award winnings stuff only to sell their marketing packages. So, it was no surprise to us to find out that both magazines belong to the same publishing group and their emails have nearly the same wording. And their marketing packages sound quite similar. Just the prices are different. This time, prices start at £420 and go up to – believe it or not – £7995.
What definitely would have revealed the scam (if we had not noticed before) was their first message saying …
which they corrected a bit later into …

How did this come about?
Back in August 2017, all started with an email from that Jazmin Collins saying that she was “delighted to advise that CACTUS COMPETENCE has received a nomination”. So, you can imagine how excited we were. A nomination! Who was it, who nominated us? Good question, but to our surprise the nominators are kept secret for their own privacy … Eh?!?
From the same email: “If you do move on to the shortlist, you will receive a short questionnaire from myself (not mandatory to complete) and our in-house research team will begin to compile a case file to support your nomination. Please note, there are no mandatory costs throughout the process, even if you go on to be successful.”
So, we completed that questionnaire and then … waited for the things to come.
Finally, in October, we received this email:
Yippie! We made it! We are “Project Management Consultant of the Year”!
Finding out we had been successful was just the start! Now we were invited to choose our Complimentary Package …
What was that? Choosing our “complimentary package”? 👀
And, reading on, disillusion started to take over. What has become of the “no mandatory costs” from the first email? In the end, the only thing we could get without any further costs was:
- The official CV Magazine press release
(which in fact is a one-page PDF with the text I cited above), and
- The inclusion in the online directory list
(which means that our company name now figures amongst the alphabetical list of winners on the magazine’s website, but without any description or link or contact details)
If we wanted more, we would have to pay.
The smallest package started at £575 and the more luxury went up to £2,995. Honi soit qui mal y pense …
What does it mean for us?
I can’t help but thinking that Corporate Vision Magazine does all these award winnings stuff only to sell their marketing packages. Seams like they have an email list and send these emails out to everybody on the list to see who will respond. I do not have the impression that they actually did research and analyse any supporting evidence, as they say. Well, they might have done some research to find the companies whom to address that initial email to. So, let’s grant them at least this. They must have made some effort to find the “candidates”.
Now. Where is the win for us? First of all, it’s a learning experience. And the very fact they found us proofs that Cactus Competence is visible on the web. Which means our continuous effort of creating high quality free content on project management leads to visibility and awareness. Which is reward enough for us to continue our work …
